Every single year, the Green Mountain Theater program puts on two shows. Last month they wrapped up the play written by theater teacher, Barbara Amberg, and alumni, Courtney Capek, called a Christmas Carol. Soon after, the auditions for the Sound of Music were held. Students from all grade levels, middle and high school alike, came and auditioned. Students recorded a video of their vocal and acting audition, then over two days, completed a dance audition as well as an improv one. Less than a week later the cast list was posted and scripts were handed out.

The Sound of Music features a young, outgoing woman named Maria. She is working to become a nun but can’t quite fit in. Mother Abbess, the head of the abbey, suggests she leave for a bit and become the new nanny of seven children at the Von Trapp estate. She goes and meets a very strict household with mischievous children. The kids soon learn to love Maria and begin to be playful once again. Captain Von Trapp doesn’t like the reintroduction of music into his home since his late wife’s passing, but the children impress the Baroness he is courting and let’s it slide. Over time, the children’s musical abilities increase and the Uncle tries to publicize their talent. Meanwhile, the Nazi’s are becoming more prevalent in Austria and it starts to conflict with the family. It follows Maria’s conflicting crush on the Captain, the nuns of the abbey, and the rise of Nazis in Austria.

Green Mountain’s very own Trinity Cathers is playing Maria in The Sound of Music. Trinity is “really excited for the opportunity to perform in The Sound of Music with such an incredible cast, crew and orchestra. [She thinks] it will be a fantastic show.” Rehearsals don’t start until the beginning of second semester but the cast is already hard at work learning their lines and songs.

The performance of The Sound of Music will take place in March. Come support Green Mountain theater and your peers by seeing the show!
